1. Any pastor or lay member of the local church can call the conference controller-Johnny Frazier (205) 226-7986 or the conference treasurer-Scott Selman (205) 226-7989 at the conference office to get your church’s disaffiliation number.
2. Take a vote among your local church leadership (Administrative Board, Leadership team, Council on Ministries, Board of Stewards, or whatever else your church calls your representative leadership group) to begin your discernment process.
3. Notify your district superintend that your leadership has begun the discernment process. (This step begins the 90 day process of discernment) Your District Superintendent can also set a tentative date for your church’s disaffiliation vote at some point beyond 90 days from the date you begin your discernment process.
4. Put together your churches discernment process plan. Your plan should include exposure to resources. This can be done either by sharing links to other church discernment materials (ie.Guntersville UMC https://www.gfumc.net/going-forward/, Vestavia Hills UMC https://vhumc.org/discernment/, Clearbranch UMC https://clearbranch.org/going-forward/ right here in the North Alabama Conference). Please feel to email us if your church has compiled your own repository of information that could be helpful to other churches.
